A teacher who grabbed a pupil by her hair and pushed her up against a wall has been handed a reprimand by teaching watchdogs.

Annemarie Kennedy, who taught at St Matthew's Academy in North Ayrshire, caused the girl to hit her head against the wall.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) issued her a formal reprimand over the incident, which took place on October 27, 2015.

The English and history teacher admitted charges which said she pulled the pupil, who has not been named, "by the arm" and "back by the hair and clothing".

Charges also say she pulled the pupil "back by the clothing and repeatedly pushed her against the wall causing her to strike her head."

The GTCS investigation committee decided the case would not go to a full hearing, which could impose more serious sanctions against the teacher.

It noted "no physical harm" was caused and the matter had been "isolated".

The committee said the teacher had "demonstrated that she has reflected on the matter, shown genuine remorse and taken steps to address the matters at issue" and noted her good character.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: "We do not comment on individual employees.

"We expect all of our teachers to adhere to the Code of Professionalism and Conduct, as set out by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Where standards fall below those expected, we have robust measures in place to ensure the appropriate course of action is taken."

The reprimand will remain on her record until April 27 next year.
