A BMW worth around £50,000 was set alight in the car park of a busy restaurant.

Police are now hunting two men seen on CCTV next to the car before it went up in flames outside the pub and restaurant in Kimarnock, Ayrshire, on Wednesday.

The BMW M4 was parked outside the Cotton Mill Brewers Fayre off the A71 at the Moorfield Roundabout when it was targeted by the men at around 9.40pm.

The 27-year-old owner was inside with two friends when his vehicle was targeted.

Police and firefighters attended by the car was completely burnt out as a result of the blaze. Another vehicle parked next to the BMW was also damaged and no one was injured.

Detective constable David Gray, of Kilmarnock CID, said: "The owner of the car, aged 27, and two friends were in the restaurant when the attack on his vehicle happened.

"Whilst the motive for this incident has still to be determined, we believe it was targeted, however, that doesn't make it any less serious.

"Setting a car on fire, especially in a busy area like a restaurant car park, is very dangerous as it could easily have spread to other cars and buildings.  Indeed a car parked next to the BMW, a blue Hyundai i10, was also damaged as a result."

He added: "On checking CCTV, two men were seen at the car just as it caught fire. We are looking to trace both men who at this time are only described as of slim build and wearing dark or grey clothing.

"They ran off after the attack towards the B7064 in the direction of Irvine Road, Kilmarnock.

"Anyone who saw the attack on the car or who has information that will assist officers with their enquiry should contact Kilmarnock CID via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence."
