A man is to stand trial charged with murdering a Mr Scotland bodybuilding champion.

Steven Kirkwood is accused of killing Michael O'Hanlon in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, in July.

The attack is said to have occurred at HK Autotek in Moorpark Industrial Estate.

Prosecutors allege Kirkwood struggled with the 45 year-old, punched him and repeatedly struck him on the body with a knife or similar item.

Kirkwood faces separate charges of having a knife in a public place and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

At the High Court in Glasgow on Monday, defence lawyer John McElroy entered not guilty pleas during a short hearing.

Judge Lord Burns set a trial due to take place next May. The case could last up to seven days.
