Football team of boy who died in training set up foundation
Kieran McDade Foundation will provide life-saving defibrillators to sports clubs across Scotland.
The football team of a young boy who collapsed then died after training have set up a foundation to provide defibrillators to sports clubs.
Kieran McDade, 13, was taken to hospital after collapsing during a training session at a park in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, in August of this year.
Kieran, who played for Dunbeth Football Club's 2003 team, was taking part in a warm-up at Dunbeth Park in the town when he suffered a cardiac arrest.
The teenager went into a coma and was transferred to the Royal Hospital for Children at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
Now, his football team have set up a foundation to provide life-saving defibrillators to other sports clubs across Scotland in his memory.
They cost around £1000 and the Kieran McDade Foundation has already secured two.
A statement from the foundation says its purpose is to "source as many defibrillator's as humanly possible" in a bid to ensure similar incident "never happen again".
It said: "The out pouring of grief that was shared from one end of the country to the next has never been seen before and will probably never be repeated.
"We will never understand why this tragedy happened or ever understand how his family feel but we need to make sure that this never happens again.
"It has affected so many people that we Dunbeth FC have took it upon ourselves to set up a foundation in the name of Kieran.
"The foundation will look to source as many defibrillator's as humanly possible and distribute them to local clubs, this will help to give children the best possible chance of life if the unfortunate happens.
"This may or may have not helped Kieran, no one can be sure but what we do know is that if we had this piece of equipment then if it could have helped it would have saved his life.
"We cannot let this happen to another child and with the help of everyone who reads and shares this site we can make football a safer place for our children to be involved in.
"Our club was very fortunate to have had two donated by local businesses and our club is a much safer place to be with them so thank you to both parties we really do appreciate this generosity."
It went on: "We will set up a just giving page where anyone can donate to the fund at anytime and we will also post a link where you can either donate money straight to the foundations bank account or if you even want to donate a defibrillator then you can message the page and we can set up either a pick up or delivery to us.
"We will distribute these machines to football clubs around the local area and widen this as the foundation grows.
"All defibrillators will be owned by the foundation and will be serviced each year which the holder will sign an agreement to pay this. If a club or association ceases to trade we will collect the machine and distribute to the next club or association.
"This is a chance for you to potentially save a life and money should never come into it so please help us keep our kids safe so we can send them back home to their parents at the end of each training session and match. We didn't do that for Kieran's mum or dad please don't let it happen to another set of parents.
"The average cost of a Defibrillator is £1000. We already have secured two and have donations for another."
