Elderly woman attacked and robbed at home dies in hospital
The 87-year-old victim died after being admitted to hospital two months ago following incident.
An elderly woman who was attacked and robbed in her own home has died in hospital two months after the "terrifying" ordeal.
The 87-year-old victim was in her house on Townhill Road in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, when she heard a knock on the door at around 7pm on September 3.
When she answered the door a man forced his way in before assaulting her and making off with a three-figure sum of cash from her purse.
The woman, who was knocked to the floor, was unable to get up and was found the next day by her son.
She was then admitted to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment where she remained until her death on Friday, November 4.
Officers are now appealing for witnesses and her currently treating her death as unexplained.
Detective chief inspector Raymond Brown said: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the robbery.
"At this time it is unknown if the lady's death is connected to the robbery and further enquiry is required.
"It is essential that anyone with any information about the robbery comes forward to help establish the full circumstances.
"I would ask members of the public who were in the area of Townhill Road on Saturday, 3 September, 2016, to please cast their minds back and think about whether they saw anything at all suspicious.
"No matter how insignificant you think your information may be, let us decide that. What you tell us could prove vital to our investigation and help provide answers for this lady's family.
"Anyone with any information can contact officers at Hamilton Police Office via 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence."
