The killing of waiter Surjit Singh Chhokar set in motion a series of events which came to a head on Monday, almost 18 years after his death.

With the jury's verdict at the High Court in Glasgow, the family of the 32-year-old may feel they have finally got some sort of justice after a quest that began back in 1998.

The case has had ramifications for the Scottish legal and political worlds, as well as in the Lanarkshire community where the crime took place.

Here is a timeline of some of the most significant developments in the Chhokar story:

1998

November 4: Surjit Singh Chhokar stabbed to death outside flat in Overtown, North Lanarkshire.

November 6: Andrew Coulter appears in court after he is arrested in connection with the death.

November 9: David Montgomery appears in court after arrest.

November 10: Ronnie Coulter also appears in court in connection with the death.

November 12: Crown instructs Andrew Coulter and David Montgomery be liberated pending review.

November 12: Ronnie Coulter fully committed for trial.

1999

March 9: Ronnie Coulter cleared of murdering Surjit Singh Chhokar after two-week trial.

June 16: Mr Chhokar's family meet MSPs as they campaign for justice.

July 2: Andrew Coulter and David Montgomery indicted for the murder.

2000

November 28: The pair walk free from court after being acquitted.

November 28: Lord advocate Colin Boyd QC orders two formal inquiries into the case.

2001

October 24: Inquiry finds serious failures by the police and by prosecutors in relation to liaison with Chhokar family.

October 24: Second inquiry finds clear defects in handling of case.

2002

December 16: Justice minister Jim Wallace rejects renewed calls for public inquiry in Mr Chhokar's death.

2011

December 4: Solicitor general Frank Mulholland receives letter from the Chhokar family calling for case to be reopened. It comes after reform of double jeopardy laws.

2012

January 17: Family appear at Scottish Parliament to make public appeal for fresh investigation

January 26: Strathclyde Police reopen the murder investigation under the new double jeopardy legislation.

August 13: Crime scene reconstruction carried out by police in bid for new witnesses to come forward.

2014

May 2: The Crown announces it is seeking to retry Ronnie Coulter, Andrew Coulter and David Montgomery.

2015

January 21: Ronnie Coulter is reindicted for the murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar.

February 24: Coulter appears at High Court in Glasgow for pre-trial hearing charged with murder.

October 8: Mr Chhokar's father, Darshan Singh Chhokar, dies after a battle with cancer.

2016

September 12: Trial begins at the High Court in Glasgow.

October 3: Ronnie Coulter is found guilty of murder by a jury following a four-week trial.

October 31: Ronnie Coulter is sentenced to life with a minimum of 19 years and eight months in prison.
