Scots behind plot to smuggle £2m of cocaine inside computers
James Quinn and Pradeep Bhowmick were caught after a lorry was searched by border agents in Hull.
Two men masterminded a plot to smuggle £2m of cocaine hidden inside computers into the UK.
Border Agency officials found the drugs after searching a lorry at Hull Docks in September 2013.
Officers found 8kg of high-purity cocaine inside the computers, which were bound for Clydebank business Selena MJ Ltd.
The investigation led police to James Quinn, 32, from Glasgow, and freight shipping clerk Pradeep Bhowmick, 31, from Paisley, who were arrested and charged.
Officers seized Bhowmick's mobile phone when they arrested him. Upon examining the phone, analysts found text messages which linked him to drug dealing.
At Edinburgh High Court on Wednesday, a jury found Quinn and Bhowmick guilty of being involved in the supply of drugs following a two-week trial.
Judge Lady Carmichael warned the pair to expect prison sentences and remanded them in custody.
She added: "Each of your counsel has made a motion that bail be continued. In my view, however, a custodial sentence is inevitable in light of the verdict."
Quinn and Bhowmick claimed they were innocent of any wrongdoing. Their lawyers said police had arrested the wrong men.
The court heard how customs officers based at King George Dock in Hull stopped a lorry which had travelled from Amsterdam in the Netherlands on September 12, 2013.
Upon searching the computers contained within the lorry, officers found the haul of high purity cocaine.
Detectives who then analysed the find concluded the drugs seized would have been worth at least £2m to the dealers who would have sold them.
Police officers then launched an investigation and found the men who masterminded the scam were Quinn and Bhowmick.
After the verdicts, it emerged Quinn had previously been jailed for 18 months for a previous conviction for assault and robbery.
It also emerged that Bhowmick, a first offender, was employed as a freight shipping clerk in Paisley.
The men will be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow in November.
