A Canada-bound plane was forced to return to Glasgow after declaring a mid-air emergency.

The Air Transat flight TS183 performed a U-turn over Ireland shortly after taking off from Glasgow Airport on Friday afternoon.

It is understood a technical issue was detected on the Airbus A310, which had departed just before 1pm.

The plane landed safely at around 2pm and was met by emergency services on the runway.

The cause of the technical issue is not yet known.

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport added: "The crew elected to return to the airport due to a technical issue.

"It landed safely just before 2pm and was met by emergency service, which is standard procedure."

No other flights are thought to have been affected by the emergency landing.
