The mother of a teenage girl murdered 20 years ago says she is "more confident than ever" her killer can be caught.

Caroline Glachan was just 14 when she was attacked next to the River Leven in Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire, on August 24 1996, then left half-submerged in the water.

Her mother, Margaret McKeitch, has issued a fresh appeal for information two decades after her daughter's death.

Ms McKeitch has previously said she believes at least six people in Bonhill know who is responsible for attacking Caroline and she probably walks past the culprit in the street most days.

She appeared at a police press conference on Monday to issue another appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

She said: "The public has a part to play in solving this crime. I'm more confident than ever that this killer can be caught.

"If you know anything please come forward and speak to the police."

Detective superintendent Jim Kerr said: "There's been reluctance in this community to come forward with information about this violent crime.

"Allegiances and friendships change over time and we urge anyone who knows anything to come forward now.

"Caroline would have been 34, possibly married by now with children of her own."

She was killed after walking down a cycle path to meet her boyfriend, who lived in the neighbouring town of Renton.

One of the last people to see Caroline before she died was friend Joanne Menzies. They had been together the night before the murder and someone heard a scream come from behind a school in the area at around 12.30am.

A man wearing a dark hooded top was seen in the area at the time. Caroline was still alive before she was dumped in the river and no alcohol or drugs were found in her system.
