An elderly couple ended up in a ditch after their car came off the road during a three-car crash in Dumfriesshire.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene on the A701 just north of St Ann's after the collision on Wednesday afternoon.

A total of three people were treated for their injuries, including the couple, who had to be helped from their vehicle after it veered into a ditch. Both were treated for minor injuries.

A man who required further treatment for his injuries has been taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary but his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident happened on the stretch of road where the entrance to the annual Eden Festival is situated, about a mile north of St Ann's Bridge.

The road was closed to traffic in both directions for more than an hour as fire crews worked to remove a vehicle which had been blocking the roadway. The road has since been reopened.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Ambulance crews received a call about a traffic collision at 2.42pm on Wednesday, August 17.

"Three vehicles were involved in the collision, with a number of people requiring treatment.

"One patient was transported to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment, while two others were checked at the scene."
