Cineworld has apologised to customers evacuated from an 18-screen complex in the dark after a power cut.

Cinema-goers at the venue on Renfrew Street in Glasgow city centre complained of being left to walk down "pitch black" fire escapes during the incident on Saturday evening.

The cinema building, said to be the world's tallest, remained shut on Sunday while work is carried out on its emergency lighting system.

Customers told of having to use their phone as a torch to find their way out of the building following the power cut at around 7pm.

One tweeted: "Made to evacuate from the fifth floor - ten-plus flights of stairs in complete darkness, no emergency lighting and no staff present."

Cineworld said customers who have purchased tickets for Renfrew Street can claim a full refund through customer services on 0333 003 3444. The firm also said the building would be reopened as soon as possible.

A statement from Cineworld said:"We can confirm that Cineworld Renfrew Street was evacuated on Saturday night due to a power cut.

"The safety of everyone under our roof is always our primary concern and staff responded promptly, alerted the fire brigade and escorted customers outside.

"The cinema is currently closed while we work hard to resolve an issue with our emergency lighting. We're really sorry for the disruption and would like to thank customers for their patience. We hope to reopen as soon as possible."
