Couple toasted £15m lottery win with Domino's and Prosecco
John and Alison Doherty cashed in their lucky ticket after going on a two-week holiday to Florida.
A couple who won almost £15m in the lottery celebrated with a Domino's Pizza and a glass of fizz.
John and Alison Doherty, from Renfrewshire, thought they had only got three numbers before double-checking their winning line.
On Tuesday, the pair spoke to the media after scooping £14.6m in the draw on Saturday, July 2.
Mrs Doherty, 50, revealed they phoned lottery operators Camelot on Sunday, July 3, after discovering they had the winning numbers.
She said: "My iPad was lying on the table so I decided I better check my ticket. When the first three numbers matched I actually thought 'Oh good I've won £25'. Then the fourth number matched and the fifth.
"When I realised I had all six numbers I couldn't believe it. I was screaming, lying on the floor, shaking like a leaf - just in complete shock."
She called Mr Doherty, 52, who got on to National Lottery operators Camelot right away to confirm the win.
They then hid their ticket at home and went on their previously booked family holiday to Florida.
The Dohertys, from Elderslie, said they struggled to sleep during the course of their break because of the lottery win.
Mrs Doherty explained how she hid the ticket before they embarked on their family holiday. She said: "I put the original ticket inside a hurricane lantern candle holder I have in my bedroom. I also made a photocopy and hid that in the box that John keeps his work boots in just in case. I wasn't taking any chances."
Once they returned, they celebrated on Saturday by ordering a Domino's Pizza takeaway accompanied by some Prosecco.
The couple have said they are now looking to their family to decided how to spend their winnings. Their 20-year-old son Ryan has asked for a car and daughter Laura, aged 11, wants a goldfish.
Mrs Doherty added: "We have two children and my son has also said he would love a new car. He's asked for an Audi or a BMW but I will probably get him something more sensible. I am his mum after all."
Mr Doherty is a plumbing and heating engineer who has been working for 33 years. He was back at work on Monday and said he is planning to continue with his job on Wednesday.
