US presidential candidate Donald Trump will fly to Scotland for the ceremonial opening of his revamped golf resort.

Trump Turnberry, in Ayrshire, opened its doors to visitors on Wednesday after an eight-month and £200m renovation.

The billionaire has now confirmed he will arrive in Scotland on June 24 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the resort.

Trump said: "Very exciting that one of the great resorts of the world, Turnberry, will be opening after a massive £200m investment.

"I own it and I am very proud of it. I look forward to attending the official opening of this great development on June 24."

Trump, who is the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party in the 2016 US presidential elections, purchased Turnberry in 2014. Its Ailsa course has played host to the Open Championship four times.

The main hotel building at the South Ayrshire resort, which has been under construction since September last year, has been updated with the remodelling of all 103 guest rooms, bars and restaurants.

The iconic Turnberry Lighthouse has been fully restored and converted into a £3500 a night two-bedroom presidential suite offering "breathtaking" views and a "uniquely exclusive" guest experience.

It is the second Scottish golf resort the tycoon has launched following the opening of Trump International Golf Links Scotland in Balmedie, Aberdeenshire, in 2012.

The property developer, whose mother Mary MacLeod was born in Stornoway, Lewis, has always maintained Scotland was his first choice for a golf resort due to his family ties and the recognition of the country as the home of golf.

Former first minister Alex Salmond said: "Trump is thoroughly bad news. His views are repellent, his investment claims exaggerated and his politics destructive. The thought of him as President of the United States should send a shiver down the spine of any decent person and therefore every one of us has an obligation to impede that appalling prospect in any way that we can.

"Thus David Cameron would be a fool to meet him. He would lend Trump credibility and further diminish his own."
