Two Good Samaritans who helped an elderly man after he was attacked and robbed have been urged by police to come forward.

William Todd, 85, was followed by two attackers who subjected him to violent assault and robbery on Govan Road in Glasgow at about 5.30pm on Saturday.

The men, who were both wearing dark clothing, then ran off south along Golspie Street in the area.

Mr Todd was helped by members of the public who called an ambulance before he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to facial injuries. He suffered bruising to his head and face, and a black eye.

Police have now urged two young men who helped Mr Todd to come forward.

A statement from the force said: "Police Scotland are looking to speak to two males in their late teens to early 20s who provided assistance to an elderly male suffering with a head injury on Saturday, at Golspie Street, Govan, Glasgow. Any information please contact Govan CID 0141-532-5592."

Police have launched a hunt for the two men responsible and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Detective constable Gordon Reid, from Govan CID, said: "This was a disgusting and cowardly attack on an elderly man who had been out enjoying an afternoon with his friends.

"In particular I would like to speak to a man who was seen getting off the bus after the victim, which had been travelling west from Govan Road.

"He is described as white, between 35 and 40 years old, with short dark hair and glasses. He was wearing a brown jacket, dark trousers, and was carrying shopping bags.

"I would also like to speak to the members of the public who went to the victim's aid as they may have information that could assist with our enquiries.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Govan CID on 101. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 where details can be given in confidence."

A JustGiving page set up to help Mr Todd has raised almost £1000 in donations from members of the public.
