A gang of four men smashed the windows of a van as the driver sat inside, before chasing it as high speeds through the streets.

Police said the incident took place in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire around 8.15pm on Thursday.

A 23-year-old man was sitting in his Citroen Berlingo works van on Park Road, Milngavie when three men got out of an Audi car nearby, while one remained in the driver's seat.

One man, who was wearing a grey T-shirt, approached the van and smashed its windscreen with a hammer.

Another man, who was bearing a blue hooded top, smashed the victim's nearside passenger window with a hammer.

The victim managed to drive off but the three men got back into the Audi, which may have been an S3 model, and chased him at high speeds.

The men pursued the van driver onto Clober Road, into Craigton Road and onto Hunter Road before turning into Craigdhu Road and back onto Park Road.

The victim then turned on to Minlgavie Road eventually managed to lose the men as he travelled south on Maryhill Road.

Detective sergeant Alan Cuthbert from Maryhill CID said: "This was a frightening incident for the victim who luckily managed to escape uninjured.

"It is critical we trace those responsible as soon as possible as their actions were extremely dangerous and not only put the victim at risk, but other drivers in the area as well. However we do believe that this was a targeted attack.

"The roads would have been busy around the time of the incident and I would appeal to any drivers or pedestrians who witnessed was happened to get in touch with officers."
