A teenager has been raped in an early hours attack in a seaside town.

The 19-year-old woman was reportedly subjected to a serious sexual assault in the early hours of Monday at Helensburgh Pier, in Argyll and Bute.

Detectives have launched a hunt for the person responsible and say inquiries are at an early stage. A description of the attacker has yet to be released.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Inquiries are under way following reports of a serious sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman at Helensburgh Pier in the early hours of Monday morning.

"The investigation is at a very early stage and inquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident."
