Five people are being hunted by police after a man was stabbed in a "very violent" attack in central Glasgow.

The 22-year-old victim was walking on Waterloo Street with a friend around 2.35am on Saturday when he was attacked by three men and two women.

Following the attack, which police say was unprovoked, he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he is being treated for "several" stab wounds. Staff described his condition as stable.

Police have issued descriptions of the five suspects, who were last seen in Turlaw Street.

The first man is described as white, in his early 20s, 5ft 6in tall, of a very thin build and wearing a dark grey cotton hooded top and matching jogging bottoms.

Suspect number two is also white and of a similar age, 5ft 4in in height, and also of a very thin build. He wore a dark grey cotton hooded top.

The third suspect is a slightly older white man, 5ft 6in tall, of very thin build and wearing a dark cotton tracksuit.

Suspect four is a white woman in her early 20s, of slim build with dark hair in a messy bun wearing a denim jacket, black leggings and white trainers.

The final suspect is a white woman in her early 20s, of heavy build, with dirty blonde shoulder length hair wearing a dark zipper top.

Detective constable Ashleigh Coghlan at Cathcart CID said: "This was a very violent attack and what appeared to be a totally unprovoked attack which has left a young man with serious injuries and his female friend traumatised by the incident.

"I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this attack or anyone who saw the five culprits running off afterwards as they may have information that could assist us in identifying those responsible."
