Rapist faces possible life sentence after attacking two women
A judge told Steven Haggerty his focus was on 'the protection of the public'.
A repeat sex offender faces a possible life sentence after being convicted of raping two women.
Steven Haggerty, 27, attacked the women, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, at addresses in the Lanarkshire area in May 2012 and December 2014.
A jury returned guilty verdicts against Haggerty, originally of Hamilton, on Thursday after a four-day trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
The court heard how Haggerty attacked a 27-year-old woman in May 2012 at a property in his home town.
Haggerty, whose address was given as being a prisoner of HMP Barlinnie, raped the second woman between December 26 2014 and December 30 2014, also in Hamilton.
Following conviction, it emerged that Haggerty had been convicted in 2005 of lewd and libidinous behaviour related to children aged between 12 and 14.
Following conviction, judge Lord Pentland ordered that a report be commissioned into whether Haggerty meets the criteria for the imposition of an Order for Lifelong Restriction.
If such an order was imposed, Haggerty would only be released into the community when the parole board no longer considered him a threat to public safety.
Deferring sentence for the court to obtain reports, Lord Pentland said: "At this stage, my focus is on the protection of the public.
"You have shown extreme disrespect towards women and displayed highly controlling behaviour towards them."
Haggerty, who also has convictions for knife possession and violence, will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on July 6.
