A man killed his father by stabbing him during an argument, a court has heard.

Robert Montgomery, 32, attacked Alan Montgomery after the dispute broke out at his father's flat on Parnie Street in Merchant City, Glasgow.

The 56-year-old refused medical attention and later died of blood poisoning.

Montgomery, from Royston, pleaded guilty at the High Court in Lanark on Thursday to the culpable homicide on July 31, 2015. He also admitted a charge of assaulting his partner Lorraine Greer weeks earlier at their home.

The court heard that on the date of the stabbing Montgomery was staying at his father's flat due to bail conditions that prevented him going to his home address.

Ms Greer and Montgomery's brother Andrew were also in the flat when the argument broke out.

When his father pushed him to the floor, Montgomery took two knives from a block in the flat's kitchen.

Advocate depute Bruce Erroch, prosecuting, said: "During the course of lunging at each other, the deceased was struck by the knives the accused was brandishing."

Mr Montgomery was stabbed in the left side of his abdomen but refused to go to hospital for treatment. He later died of blood poisoning as a result of a delayed complication of the untreated wound.

Police trawling CCTV of the area identified Montgomery as a suspect and he was later arrested.

Judge Lord Bannatyne deferred sentencing until May and Montgomery was remanded in custody.
