Police have issued a fresh appeal in the hunt for two masked men who robbed £10,000 from security guards during a late-night bank raid.

The men, armed with weapons and wearing blue overalls and masks, smashed their way into a Santander bank in Argyll in the early hours of Wednesday.

The G4S guards were inside the branch on West Princes Street in Helensburgh to transfer cash at around 12.30am when the men entered and threatened them with weapons.

They then made off in an unknown direction with the cash box, which contained a five-figure sum of money.

The suspects are of medium height, medium build and were wearing blue overalls and masks at the time of the incident.

Detectives have been carrying out a number of inquiries in the local area, including reviewing CCTV and speaking to local residents and businesses nearby.

Detective inspector Douglas Wilson, of Argyll and West Dunbartonshire CID, who is senior investigating officer, said on Thursday: "Since our initial appeal yesterday, our inquiries have been progressing and I would like to thank those who have taken the time to contact us with information.

"We understand now that there were a number of people in the public car park in Sinclair Street around the time of the incident, which is just off West Princes Street where the attack took place.

"I would like to appeal to those people who were in the area between midnight and 1am as they may have information which could assist with our enquiries.

"No matter how insignificant it may seem, please contact us with any information you have. Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the areas of West Princes Street or Sinclair Street, and similarly did you see any vehicles nearby acting suspiciously?

"Please contact officers by dialling 101. Again, I would like to reiterate to anyone who has any information, no matter how small it may seem, please let us be the judge of that and pass the information on."

Information can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers by dialling 0800 555111.
