A woman who died in a double-decker bus crash which left 11 other people injured has been named by police.

Andrea Harris, 45, from Ardrossan, died at the scene of the crash near the Ayrshire town on Monday after a Stagecoach bus was involved in a collision with a 4x4.

She was a passenger on the double-decker 585 service from Ayr to Greenock when the smash happened on the A78 at around 2pm. Eleven other people were taken to hospital after the crash.

A major incident was declared as two air ambulances attended along with several fire crews, road ambulances and police.

Two people, who were critically injured, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Nine others were taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock for treatment.

Police say they are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "The 45 year-old woman who died can now be named as Andrea Harris of Ardrossan.

"Relatives are aware. A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the crash, and we would ask anyone with information to contact Police Scotland on 101."

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach said: "Our heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of Andrea Harris who died in Monday's road accident near Ardrossan. Our thoughts also remain with all those affected by the incident, including our driver and others who were taken to hospital.

"We are continuing to assist police in their investigation into the circumstances involved in the accident, including supplying them with CCTV footage of the incident. This footage confirms that the bus was travelling normally, on the correct side of the road, when the incident occurred.

"We understand that the police do not expect to take any action against our driver. We would urge anyone with any information about the incident to contact the police if they have not already done so."
