Swimmer welcomes inaugural European Championships to Glasgow
Commonwealth gold medallist Ross Murdoch hopes tournament in 2018 will attract more events.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ross Murdoch hopes hosting the inaugural European Championships in 2018 can help attract more top sporting events to Glasgow.
The 22-year-old swimmer will represent Britain in the tournament, which also includes events in cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing, athletics and triathlon.
It will be the first time different disciplines will come together for one main games event in Europe.
Murdoch helped unveil a logo, video and hash tag #The Moment for the event, which is being held in Glasgow and Berlin.
He said: "I hope that it can continue, not just for swimming but for all sports, to get more world-class events here.
"Scotland, as a whole, deserves it and Glasgow deserves it. We have already proven numerous times that we can host world-class events and make them the best ever.
"I just hope that that can continue. It gives us a little extra motivation in the pool."
Tollcross International Swimming Centre in the city's east end will host the aquatics events during the tournament.
Murdoch said one of the "defining moments" of his career took place in Glasgow when he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
He said: "Tollcross is such an intimate venue for swimming it felt like the crowd was right on my shoulders as I came up from that last turn and I will never ever, ever forget the noise I heard.
"I came up from that last turn and I just heard that roar."
Glasgow City Council leader Frank McAveety said: "I'm quite partisan. I want to make sure we can reignite that enthusiasm that we had for the swimming events during the Commonwealth Games.
"I'm sure the best of European talent will be in the pool in the east end of Glasgow."
Scotland will team up with Berlin, which will host the athletics events, while Glasgow will be home to aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon.
