A motorist who drove into a pedestrian and left him with serious injuries blamed his job at the Commonwealth Games for causing him to speed.

Brian Luke, 28, careered on to the wrong side of Blochairn Road in Glasgow and smashed into an oncoming car before hitting Gary Blair.

Mr Blair, who was walking with his back to Luke, was hit and carried by the Volkswagen Golf before being thrown into the air, breaking his nose, shoulder, wrist and ankle.

He was in hospital for three weeks after the incident, left in a wheelchair for four months and now walks with a limp.

Luke, from Maryhill, Glasgow, pled guilty to dangerous driving on July 18, 2014 and hitting Angela McFadden's Citroen and Mr Blair to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment.

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC handed him a community payback order with the condition he must carry out 240 hours of unpaid work.

Luke was also ordered to pay Mr Blair £1500 compensation and will be disqualified from driving for two years.

Defence lawyer Brian Fitzpatrick said Luke was "up against it" for time after being held on late with his work and had an "obligation" to get his partner to work on time.

In his plea in mitigation for his client, Mr Fitzpatrick said: "He was working on a Commonwealth Games project in the east end of the city. There were time pressures to do with that contract."
