A missing man found dead two days after crashing his car was discovered at the bottom of a ravine by mountain rescuers, it has emerged.

Jamie Donnelly, 29, was last seen in Lansbury Street, Greenock at around 12.30pm on Saturday before his crashed car was found that night.

The vehicle was found in Kilmacolm Road, near to Knocknairshill Cemetery in the town. The one-car accident was reported to the emergency services at about 8pm. His body was found around a mile from the crash scene.

Police on Thursday revealed more details about the incident, saying Mr Donnelly's body was discovered by a mountain rescue team in water at the bottom of a ravine.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place to find out the exact cause of death.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Jamie's body was recovered by specialist mountain rescue officers from a burn in the bottom a ravine near Knocknairshill, Greenock, on Monday 8 February 2016. His relatives are aware.

"A post mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact casue of his death, however, at this time, there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances."
