A teacher who accidentally projected pornographic images on to a screen in front of his class has been struck off.

Stephen Lawrie accessed a pornographic website while teaching S2 pupils at Coatbridge High School, with the images then projected on to a smart board.

Mr Lawrie, 56, has now agreed to be struck off the register of teachers following a hearing at the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) on Thursday.

The IT tutor was suspended from the North Lanarkshire school following the incident on April 27 last year. He was later sacked by the council.

The GTCS decision means he will only be able to teach again if he reapplies to be a teacher after two years.

Its charges tell the teacher: "You did access an inappropriate pornographic website whilst teaching an S2 class and did cause the contents of the website to be projected on to the classroom smart board and viewed by the class."

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “Mr Stephen Lawrie was suspended from his post following allegations of inappropriate conduct.

"A formal investigation was carried out, resulting in the termination of his contract and the council notifying the General Teaching Council. Mr Lawrie left his employment on August 13, 2015."
