The driver of a cement mixer has been rescued after his vehicle overturned on a motorway slip road.

Fire crews were sent to the scene on the M74 near Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, after reports of the incident were received at about 1pm on Monday.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the truck on its side and the driver trapped in the cab.

Fire service watch manager Gary Hoey said: "The driver was physically trapped and he told us that he was in pain.

"A trauma doctor and ambulance paramedics assessed his condition and they were happy for him to assist our crews in his own rescue by moving within the cab."

Firefighters then used a hydraulic saw to cut into the roof and create a flap before taking out the steering wheel and lifting the driver out.

After being released from the truck the man was taken to Wishaw General Hospital by ambulance.

The road was closed while the operation took place.
