A teacher is to stand trial charged with sexually abusing two pupils 20 years apart.

Ronald Burton faced the accusations during a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday.

Prosecutors claim he carried out one attack after hypnotising or attempting to hyponotise the alleged victim.

Burton is said have worked at two secondary schools in South Lanarkshire at the time of the offences.

The two boys involved are listed on the indictment as being pupils of the 60-year-old.

He faces a charge of lewd and libidinous behaviour against one between 1994 and 1996. The boy is said to have been aged between 11 and 13 at the time.

It is further alleged Burton went on to rape and sexually assault another boy in 2014. The alleged victim was aged around 13.

The charges include claims he bought the child a gym membership and took him there.

It is also alleged during one attack at Burton's home in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, he hypnotised the youngster or attempted to. He is further said to have supplied cannabis to the boy.

Burton denied a total of seven charges during a short hearing.

Judge Lady Scott set a trial due to begin in July. It is expected the case will last around four days.
