Hibernian have cut short Glenn Middleton's loan spell at Easter Road, allowing the winger to return to Rangers.

The 19-year-old initially joined the Leith club for the season but he will return to Ibrox ahead of the January transfer window.

Middleton's involvement in the first team has been limited since the return of Martin Boyle, who netted a double in a 2-0 win over Hearts on Boxing Day.

He was pictured training with his parent club on Friday, prompting Hibs to release a statement confirming the former Norwich youngster's departure.

The club said: "Initially due to run until the end of the season, Glenn has been allowed to return to Ibrox ahead of the January transfer window opening, when he will be free to feature for Steven Gerrard’s side.

"Brought in as an option out wide following the loss of Martin Boyle to injury, the Australian international’s return to fitness and top form ahead of schedule has limited Glenn’s first team involvement of late.

"He leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Easter Road."
