A Scottish referee who officiated at the 1990 World Cup in Italy has died aged 75.

George Smith also took charge of the 1980 Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Rangers, which ended in riots on the Hampden pitch.

Smith's death was confirmed by the Edinburgh and District Referees Association, where he was honorary president.

They said: "It is with great sadness to make you all aware that our honorary president George Smith has passed away.

"With his death Scottish refereeing has lost one of its outstanding figures of recent times.

"Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this difficult time."

He handed out seven yellow cards during the World Cup clash between Austria and Czechoslovakia and also refereed the 1988 and 1990 Scottish Cup finals.
