Adam Hastings has said that he aims to be part of Scotland's Six Nations team and believes he and Finn Russell could be part of the same side.

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has said that Hastings is "genuine competition" for the number 10 jersey that Russell has called his own but has hinted that he could introduce some variety by playing Hastings at stand-off and moving Russell to inside-centre.

The pair combined to deliver Hastings' first Scotland try when the Warriors star came off the bench against Fiji on Saturday and he believes a dual-playmaker pairing could deliver success, pointing to England's use of a similar system.

"Every good 12 is a very good talker," he said. "Finn usually plays 10 and if he moved out to 12 he will talk a lot and it just helps you at 10 and gives you more time.

"I don't see why it couldn't work.

"Having two ball players at 10 and 12, and you've seen it with England with Ford and Farrell, you can swap and change. It offers a lot of variety and also depth, in terms of injury."

Hastings admitted that Townsend's comments about competition and how to use him in the future had been a real boost, as he revealed he is targeting starts when the Six Nations get under way.

"It gives me huge amounts of confidence, that coming from the coach," he said. "I've said before that I feel like at Glasgow the coaches have backed me this year and it's a huge confidence boost.

"I'm still enjoying learning off Finn as well and it can't hurt if the coach is saying that.

"I've obviously not played a huge amount of international rugby so hopefully over the next couple of weeks I'll get more game time and moving on to the Six Nations I'll hope to be picked for that.

"I'll just keep taking each game as it comes. You can't think too far ahead."
