SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has voiced his "extreme disappointment" at the recent coin-throwing incidents in Scottish football.

During last Wednesday's Edinburgh derby Hibs head coach Neil Lennon was floored after being struck with a coin, while Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal was hit by a fan and two assistant referees were also targeted.

On Saturday, footage showed Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos being hit with a coin.

Doncaster, who was at a league sponsorship event and would only answer one question on the subject, called on clubs and the police to hand out strong penalties.

He said: "It's extremely disappointing that a number of incidents like that have happened in recent times.

"Clearly throwing coins has the potential to do real harm.

"Last season we initiated an audit of CCTV systems in all of the grounds in the Premiership.

"That audit is ongoing but we've already seen one club invest in upgraded CCTV as a result.

"In fact, it's that kit which facilitated the arrest of someone at the Hearts v Hibs game.

"Certainly CCTV plays an important part in helping identify the people behind this behaviour.

"It has no place in the game whatsoever.

"We are keen to see as much action as possible being taken by the clubs and police against people who engage in this sort of activity."
