Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was left to lament missed tackles and a poor start as Wales ran out 21-10 winners in the first of the autumn Tests.

Tries by British and Irish Lions Test stars George North and Jonathan Davies were the highlights for the hosts as they won the inaugural Doddie Weir Cup.

Full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked 11 points to ensure that Wales took their 10th successive home win in the fixture.

Skipper Stuart McInally scored a try in the high point for Scotland, while fly-half Adam Hastings kicked a penalty and conversion.

However, missed tackles by centre Huw Jones in the lead-up to both Welsh tries were key to the frustrating afternoon and Townsend said the player had taken responsibility for the mistakes.

Townsend said: "Huw put his hand up in the changing room to the players straightaway. They were big mistakes in the game.

"He is a player who works really hard. I thought he attacked well, but defending at this level, you have got to put your tackles in, especially when you have got guys who are world-class attackers.

"We will always look at what we could do better. The two tries they scored, we will look at as defensive errors.

"We didn't start with the energy and the accuracy that is required in a game like this against a very good opponent."

Scotland will now look to bounce back for the remaining Tests, against Fiji, South Africa and Argentina.
