Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was struck with an object thrown from the stands as he celebrated his goal in the team's 2-0 victory over St Mirren in Paisley.

The Colombian forward was unaware of the object hitting him as he slid across the turf but a Rangers source told STV that the incident was "extremely disturbing".

Police Scotland will now investigate footage from the match. A Police spokesperson said: "No reports were made to police of coins being thrown at players at the game by either club, players or stewards.

"However, having been made aware of the video footage, the incident will be investigated."

Hibernian boss Neil Lennon was struck in the face with a coin during the Edinburgh derby on Wednesday in a match where two assistant referees were also hit with missiles and Hearts keeper Zdenek Zlamal was punched by an opposition fan as he retrieved the ball from behind his goal.

Following the match at the Simply Digital Arena, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard said: "Is it going to have to take someone's eye to come out or someone to be badly hurt from an object for us to make it stop?

"These people shouldn't be at a football match. You just ban them forever. It's that simple. Then it will stop."
