Brendan Rodgers has said that Celtic can still reach the Europa League knockout stages, and that they showed on Thursday that they can beat RB Leipzig in Glasgow.

The Scottish champions lost the first match of their double-header against Leipzig 2-0 in Germany, with first half defensive lapses proving costly.

Rodgers was forced to put out a much-changed side because of injuries and suspension but said he was satisfied by the efforts of the players who took to the field. Though unhappy with mistakes at the back being punished again, he struck an upbeat note when talking about Celtic's prospects of getting out of Group B.

"I think we've seen enough to know that we can win the game at home," he said. "We'll have players who will come back but, certainly from tonight's performance, I believe it's something that'll be well within our capability.

"It should be a great night for us with the supporters. Our support tonight was amazing right the way through the game.

"Having 60,000 at home is going to give us a great opportunity and we know that if we're going to have any aspirations of getting out of the group then it's a game we have to win. That'll be our objective come the next game."

Assessing the group and the matches so far, Rodgers said that he felt Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig were of a level that could see them in Europe's premier competition. However, he said that the group was far from over with Celtic still to play both those teams in Glasgow.

"We've obviously lost two games against two very good sides away from home," he said. "We've got three points on the board, which is always important.

"We always knew our home games were going to be vital in this and we always try and pick up something away from home.

"There's three other good sides in the group, two very good sides that really are Champions League level opposition but we're still in with a great chance.

"We have to look to our next game at home and really look to win that. If we don't then it becomes really, really difficult  but I believe that it still gives us a great chance but we know we have some work to do."
