Gary Caldwell has been confirmed as Partick Thistle's new manager.

The former Scotland international takes over the Jags with immediate effect, with Brian Kerr joining as assistant manager.

During his playing days, Caldwell enjoyed spells at Hibs and Celtic before moving south to Wigan, where he took up his first position in coaching.

The 36-year-old led the Latics to the League One title in his first full season in charge but left in 2016 with the club languishing near the bottom of the Championship.

Most recently, Caldwell managed Chesterfield, departing after a short spell after being unable to prevent the Spireites slide into League Two.

Chairman Jacqui Low said Thistle were "blown away" by the ex-Hoops defender's interview for the post.

A statement read: "We were blown away by Gary's interview preparation and, in the space of a week, he had done an analysis of each player, identified a training schedule to deal with the fitness levels and pulled together a vision of how to get Thistle playing well enough to secure promotion.

"Put simply, he plans to build a strong defence that allows us to then push forward and play attacking football. Gary's proposals were detailed and realistic.

"The high degree of clarity and organisation with which Gary shared his views was a significant factor in him being chosen as the preferred candidate."
