Steven Gerrard has said it would be unfair to ask Rangers or Celtic to play a cup semi-final less than 48 hours after a Europa League tie.

Rangers progressed to the League Cup last four with a 4-0 win over Ayr United and were drawn against Aberdeen. Celtic face Hearts in the other semi-final with games scheduled for October 28 and 29 but the Glasgow sides are both in Europe on the Thursday night.

It's possible tournament organisers could switch one game to Murrayfield on the Sunday to allow both teams equal rest but Gerrard says a solution has to be found because the current scheduling isn't right.

"The way I understood it was the first tie out of the draw plays on Saturday?" he joked before stressing the difficulties.

"Listen, whoever has to do that, it's not fair on any team, having played on the Thursday night. I'll be interested to see how they decide. All the best with that one.

"We'll deal with that when we have to. I'm not sure how they will select who plays when or what the rules are.

"Whoever has to do it it won't be fair as 48 hours is not enough."

Gerrard was pleased with side's comprehensive win over Ayr and said he would look forward to the Aberdeen tie. However, Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos will miss that match after picking up a second yellow card of the competition.

Morelos was booked for an angry outburst at referee Bobby Madden after being fouled by Jamie Adams.

The manager expressed his sympathy and said the wrong call would rob him of his striker for a crucial game.

"I can understand him getting frustrated because for me it was a yellow card offence on him. The referee said the player got the ball clean but I disagree. Alfredo's got it wrong at times this season, which I've told him about, but I can understand his frustration tonight.

We suffer as a club because we don't have him available so the only thing we go away from tonight disappointed in is that.
