Hearts drawn to face Celtic in semi, Rangers face Dons
The draw for the semi-finals of the League Cup has been made.
Hearts will play holders Celtic in the League Cup semi-finals, with Rangers drawn to play Aberdeen.
The draw for the final four of the competition was made after the conclusion of Wednesday night's quarter-final games.
Aberdeen were the first team to put their name in the draw, defeating Hibs 6-5 on penalties after the sides played out a goalless draw at Easter Road on Tuesday.
Rangers thumped Ayr United to take their place in the last four but it came at a cost with Alfredo Morelos picking up a yellow card that rules him out of the Hampden match. The Colombian's fellow striker Kyle Lafferty is cup-tied after playing for Hearts before his move to Ibrox.
Hearts struck twice late on to make it past Motherwell in a thriller at Tynecastle. With the sides locked at 2-2, Olly Lee and Steven Naismith scored in the last ten minutes to put Craig Levein's side through.
Celtic also struck late with Leigh Griffiths scoring the only goal against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. However, Dedryck Boyata was sent off in the final stages and he'll also miss the semi-final.
Semi-final ties are scheduled for the weekend of October 27/28, with the final to be played on Sunday December 2.
Celtic travel to face RB Leipzig in the Europa League on the Thursday before the semi-final, with Rangers playing at home against Spartak Moscow on the same night.
That poses a question for the SPFL with the first semifinal scheduled less than 48 hours later. The tournament organisers will consult but it could be the case that both matches are scheduled for Sunday 28 but in different cities, with Murrayfield being used to host the other semi-final. Any such arrangement would also need to suit broadcast rights-holder BT Sport.
