Wes Foderingham said losing the goalkeeping jersey in Steven Gerrard's Rangers side to Allan McGregor has been "difficult" as he still sees himself as a number one stopper.

The Englishman has had to settle primarily for a spot on the bench this season after Gerrard drafted in the Scotland international.

With three senior goalkeepers at Ibrox over the summer months, Foderingham was linked with a move away before Jak Alnwick departed.

Despite the speculation over his future, the ex-Swindon goalkeeper insisted he always wanted to stay and fight for a starting spot in Steven Gerrard's team.

He said: "Three doesn't go into two so there was going to be speculation there.

"But my stance was I wanted to stay and compete, I've the opportunity to do that now."

McGregor's impressive showings, particularly across Rangers' European run so far, have left Foderingham with an increasingly difficult task to regain his starting spot.

The 27-year-old could be handed an opportunity to impress on Wednesday, though, when the Light Blues face Ayr.

Foderingham admitted it had been a struggle watching on to this point but insisted he's determined to battle for a start.

"It has been difficult," he added. "I'm not used to it, it's the first time I've found myself on the bench so it is difficult.

"Different demands are being placed on me and it's up to me to face up to those challenges on and off the pitch.

"I still see myself as a number one that is not in the side at the moment.

"My job is to train the best I can and when I get the opportunity to play, give a good account of myself."
