Hearts boss Craig Levein has said anyone questioning Celtic's title credentials following the champions' slow start is sadly mistaken.

Brendan Rodgers' Hoops have endured their worst start to a domestic league campaign in 20 years, dropping eight points across their opening six matches.

The Jam Tarts, meanwhile, have flown out of the blocks, scooping up 16 points from 18 and beating the champions earlier in the season at Tynecastle.

Levein, however, believes it's would be premature to suggest Rodgers' team aren't as strong as his Double Treble winners.

Asked if their faltering start hinted at a weaker Celtic, the Hearts manager said: "I don't quite agree with that.

"They've had a slower start but it's very early in the season and they will get stronger for sure.

"Brendan has proven he is a top, top manager with top, top players.

"They're having a little blip but with the resources they have, they'll be there for sure."

He added: "Brendan was talking about his side's form not being great but they have the resources to turn that around.

"Anyone who thinks Celtic aren't going to be involved in the title challenge this year is sadly mistaken."

While Levein expects Rodgers' men to improve, the Jam Tarts boss believes it will take until the turn of the year to decide whether a previous one-horse race for the Premiership title becomes a more open affair this time out.

He continued: "You have to get round the first 11 games then once everyone has played everybody you get a better idea of what the league will look like.

"We've started well, but have some tough places to go to. I think we can get better, we've players to come back who can help us and have already signed a striker for January.

"As long as we keep performing well, we've a chance."
