Rangers manager Steven Gerrard said Sunday's league clash with St Johnstone is more important than playing Villarreal in Europe.

The Light Blues secured a point with a 2-2 draw in their opening Europa League group match on Thursday but return to domestic duties against Tommy Wright's side at Ibrox on Sunday.

Gerrard, whose side sit seven points behind leaders Hearts, said that although European football is important, their main focus will be the Premiership

He said: "Sunday, in my eyes, is more important than Villarreal.

"I made it clear to the players after we came back from the international break that after the Celtic setback that league games are the priority.

"Obviously Villarreal was a very important game but for me the league is the priority."

Rangers came from behind twice in the second-half against Villarreal, and Gerrard is hoping to carry the form shown in the second period into the weekend.

He believes his side are yet to show their full potential over a full 90 minutes and will have to be more ruthless.

He added: "We have to show our style, we are better when we are on the front foot. A lot of teams have struggled at Ibrox when we go through the gears.

"I thought the second half last night was our strongest performance considering the opposition, the stage, the setbacks. I thought we were terrific for 45.

"If we can carry that into St Johnstone, I'm really looking forward to it but we have to deliver it.

"I'd love to see it [for 90 minutes], I think it would be a good watch and the players are capable of doing it. It's down to focus and concentration.

"Part of the job description when I came here and sat down with the board, the two words that kept coming out were ruthless and relentless and that's why I want my players to be like.

"That's probably why I was slightly harsh on them after the Dundee game. I don't want to settle for periods of game when we are good.

"I want to really go for teams, if we get the opportunity and we smell blood I want to go for teams.

"The threat will certainly be there in St Johnstone, if we're not at it and think we can turn up in second or third gear, we could face some problems."
