Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said a bid from Swansea for Scott McKenna won't be welcomed at Pittodrie after the Welsh outfit enquired about the centre-back's availability.

Swansea are close to selling defender Alfie Mawson to Fulham for a reported £20m fee and McInnes confirmed the Championship side had sounded out the Dons over a potential swoop for McKenna to fill the void.

However, after the chat McInnes expects the Swans to look elsewhere for a replacement as Aberdeen will only allow the Scotland cap to leave for a "way over the top" fee.

On Swansea's interest in McKenna, McInnes said: "Not an official approach, we've had a conversation with Swansea.

"They asked about Scott's availability and that was it.

"I don't expect them to make an offer, if they do it's not something we'd be encouraging and that was the just of the conversation.

"We're not saying he's not for sale but any offer for McKenna will have to be way over the top, whether that's this window, next window, whatever.

He added: "It's not a matter of if Scott McKenna leaves Aberdeen, it's when and from my point of view I would rather that was further down the line.

"Having spoken to Scott often enough, he sees the importance of playing the games.

"You never know, Swansea have just sold a centre-half for £20m and, for me, Scott has the potential to be better than the boy who has just went (Mawson)."

McKenna will once again be front and centre in the shop window when the Dons take on Premier League side Burnley in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday.

The 21-year-old impressed in his first outing against the Clarets last week as the Aberdeen defence kept Sean Dyche's team at bay until the closing stages.

McInnes continued: "We're well aware the vultures are circling. He past his first test last week against Burnley and his international recognition has elevated him.

"But, for me, Scott will go straight to the Premier League, he'll bypass the Championship, he's too good not to be playing in the Premier League in the future.

"I think he feels that, that suggests the confidence of the player. It's human nature to get a bit giddy about speculation and earning more money but the best players will wait for the right ones.

"No disrespect to Championship clubs but Scott will go straight to the Premiership.

"I'm hoping it's not this summer and I'm confident it won't be."
