McInnes: Burnley pose Dons toughest test since Sociedad tie
Derek McInnes insisted Aberdeen are confident of causing a Europa League upset.
Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes said he's confident of causing a Europa League upset against Burnley despite facing his toughest test since taking on Real Sociedad four years ago.
Sean Dyche brings his Premier League overachievers north for the first leg of the Europa League second round qualifier at Pittodrie on Thursday night.
McInnes expects to face formidable opposition in the Clarets, similar in stature to the Sociedad side which overcame the Dons 5-2 on aggregate four years ago.
He said: "We've beaten some good teams but when you look at the league Burnley are operating in, any team that can finish seventh in the English Premier League is a very good side that has to be doing so much right.
"Sean has done a brilliant job and is rinsing everything out of that team, so from that point or view, it would have to be right up there.
"A comparison is maybe Real Sociedad, they've been the best team to date we've played in the Europa League.
"We were very close to causing a huge shock there so we will draw on all the experiences we've had.
"Whether we've been the favourites or the underdogs we've always went into every tie believing we can win it and that'll be the case against Burnley."
Aberdeen received £2.28m in prize money for finishing second last season, while Burnley picked up £120m in TV and prize money for their seventh placed Premier League finish.
McInnes, who is looking to push through another deal before Wednesday's 11pm deadline after completing moves for Tommie Hoban and Tomas Cerny, said the Dons hold no inferiority complex despite the financial chasm.
He added: "There's not a huge gulf between the clubs but there is a huge gulf between the leagues.
"Burnley operate at a completely different level with the finances but we are a very proud club with traditions and a brilliant support.
"There's no inferiority complex but of course there's a huge difference between the leagues.
"I'm not bothered what people think of the Scottish league though, I just want to win the game.
"That's all I'm interested in."
