St Mirren boss Alan Stubbs was heavily critical of his team after they could only manage a bonus point against minnows Spartans in the League Cup.

The sides drew 2-2 after 90 minutes with a penalty shootout miss by Blair Atkinson settling the match.

Stubbs, in charge of his first home game at the newly-promoted Premiership side, was frustrated and unhappy with his players and made it clear they will have to step up in the weeks and months to come.

"It was a frustrating night," he said.

"The way we approached the game in the first half was not what I wanted and I have to be honest, it took the introduction of Stephen McGinn to really spark us into life.

"For me, that is not acceptable.

"Whether the first goal was offside or not is not my main concern. What is my concern was that the players didn't set standards that I expect of them at this football club and it won't be accepted."

Stubbs has previously said that he is trying to recruit at least one forward player, and has been linked with Anthony Stokes and a loan move for Celtic's Mikey Johnston. Though he didn't comment on either player, he said that the match had proven a new addition was necessary.

He said: "It highlights the need to add some extra quality in the final third. We knew that before the game so the search goes on and we still have a few weeks to do that."
