Celtic to open talks with Dedryck Boyata over new contract
Brendan Rodgers said he'd love to keep the Belgian defender who played at World Cup.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has s****tressed the importance of keeping Dedryck Boyata at the club as the Belgian's contract runs down.
Boyata, who played in all three of the Red Devils' World Cup group fixtures, has 12 months left on his Parkhead deal.
The 27-year-old is currently on a summer break as he recovers post-Russia.
Boyata has been made aware Celtic would like to extend his stay, though, and talks will continue upon his return to Scotland.
Rodgers, who confirmed Tom Rogic will be absent for Wednesday's second leg against Alashkert, said: "I've always said that once he got into the team, he done very, very well.
"He's an experienced player now and his experience at the World Cup will only benefit him.
"He's got a year left, he's a player we'd love to keep, he knows that, but naturally, he's now on holiday, he'll be relaxing and we'll pick that up when he gets back.
"He needs to rest and recover but we'll speak when he gets back."
Young winger Mikey Johnstone has been linked with a move away from Parkhead, with loan moves to Hibs and St Mirren touted.
Rodgers, however, insisted the 19-year-old has forced his way into his plans after impressing during pre-season.
The Northern Irishman added: "He'll very much be staying here at Celtic at this point of time, he's a very exciting young talent.
"His best position is off the left-hand side but you saw the other day, he is very comfortable playing on the right.
"He's learning the other side of the game, in terms of how to work and how to recover, but there is no doubt he is a special talent going forward.
"So he is very much in my plans, we need to develop him and get him games, if that changes then there are a number of options in terms of teams who would like to take him.
"But, at this moment, he stays."
