St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says he'll give new signing Tony Watt a chance to shine again.

Since bursting onto the scene at Celtic six years ago, the striker has played for Lierse, Standard Liege, and Charlton, followed by disappointing loan spells with Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and Hearts.

The 24-year-old now teams up with Wright after he signed a one-year-deal with the Saints on Monday having left Belgian second-tier side OH Leuven in February.

Wright says that under his tutelage he hopes the Scotland cap can rediscover his early promise and star at McDiarmid Park.

He said: "We can give him a platform to play, enjoy his football.

"He has to work hard obviously and he has to compete with two or three other strikers.

"We'll put an arm round his shoulder when it's needed.

"If he needs a kick up his backside at times we'll give him that as well but we'll be honest with him.

"I've been honest when I've met with him and told him what we expect of him and he was really keen to come and I'm pleased the chairman got the deal done.

"I think if we can get Tony Watt back to what he should be then he'll score goals and he will create goals for us.

"He's looking forward to competing with the rest of the players at the club for a place and getting starts.

"A lot of hard work and he can do that.

"He's kept himself in good nick.

"Players playing at that end of the pitch that's what they have to do score goals and create them
