Scottish teenage golfer Sam Locke said his qualification for The Open had left him "absolutely ecstatic".

The 19-year-old amateur, who funds his play by working as a barista in Paul Lawrie's golf centre, booked his spot at Carnoustie by leading the field at The Renaissance Club with a seven-under par finish on Tuesday.

His reward is a spot amongst a star-studded field which includes Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods when the tournament begins on July 19.

Locke said nerves would play their part when he stepped up to the first tee but insisted he'd relish the opportunity to test himself against golf's best.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," said Locke. "Obviously to qualify for the biggest tournament in the world is a good feeling.

"You want to compete in major championships and against the best guys in the world, so to do it at 19-years-old is pretty cool.

"It'll be nice to get some experience playing in such a big event and I'm sure I'll learn a lot over the week.

"There will be a big crowd at the first tee, and a lot of people will be coming to support me but I've just got to treat it like any other tournament.

"It'll be pretty nerve-wracking but I'm sure I'll enjoy it."
