Ross County boss Owen Coyle says his players showed restraint not to react after punches were thrown by Hamilton defender Giannas Skondras.

While accepting his side's accountability in the touchline melee that followed, he has questioned counterpart Martin Canning's point of view on the incident.

Players from both sides clashed in the closing stages of Accies' 3-2 win over the Staggies, with Skondras given his marching orders by referee Gavin Duncan.

The Greek full back has since been charged with excessive misconduct by the Scottish FA.

Both clubs have also been issued with notices of complaint related to having three or more players or members of staff involved in a confrontation.

Coyle says while his players did not do a lot wrong on an individual basis they must accept their part in the touchline clash.

He said: "We all know the ruling, sometimes you have to accept your accountability. I have got to say, I don't think individually we did a lot wrong in the incident but we were a part of it.

"There have been no individual charges against Ross County. Obviously, Hamilton have received those individual charges.

"I think on their part there were a few punches thrown and we showed a lot of restraint not to react when punches were thrown."

He added: "But we still can't be in a group on mass when there is a confrontation.

"There is no place in football for that and I've stressed that to the players. We can't get caught up in the drama that another club brings."

Hamilton manager Martin Canning insisted he was surprised the SFA failed to charge any Ross County players, citing Ross County defender Kenny Van der Weg's push on Skondras before things boiled over.

Coyle questions his counterpart's point of view, however, and claims Canning would be better served to focus on curbing his own players' aggressive streak rather than worrying about their opponents.

He said: "I don't know what Martin (Canning) is surprised about. Martin's job is to look after Hamilton players so his comments should be regarding Hamilton and Skondras, not about Ross County.

"As I've mentioned, we take our responsibility and know we don't want to react in that manner. But we did show restraint under provocation.

"Martin can look after his lad Skondras and whoever else got involved in throwing punches."
