Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes says any links to Rangers are mere speculation and no contact has been made by the Ibrox club.

McInnes remains the bookmakers' favourite to take over from Pedro Caixinha as the Light Blues manager on a permanent basis.

Despite three weeks having passed without Rangers making their move, the Dons boss remains the subject of column inches and media attention regarding the post.

Asked if he could stop speculation linking him with the vacancy at his former club by ruling himself out, McInnes said: "There has been no contact from any club which means it's just speculation.

"It's three weeks on now (since Pedro Caixinha left Rangers) so, no, I don't want to be sitting here answering questions all the time on it at every press conference I do.

He added: "I'm not going to comment or react to any speculation.

"There has been a lot of comment and enough said about it and I'm not going to comment.

"My job is Aberdeen manager and I'm here to talk about Aberdeen."

Meanwhile, the Dons boss says he was gutted after club captain Graeme Shinnie was made to wait for his Scotland debut.

Shinnie, who is suspended for this weekend's Scottish Premiership contest with Motherwell, was called up to Malky Mackay's squad for the Pittodrie match against the Dutch.

Club teammates Ryan Christie and Kenny McLean played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat but Shinnie remained an unused substitute.

While McInnes took positives from seeing the trio's displays in the north east recognised by Mackay, the Dons manager was left frustrated as Shinnie warmed the bench.

He said: "I was really disappointed for Graeme, I was hoping he'd get more than a few minutes.

"I know how important it was for him and would have been such a nice touch for him to get his first cap in his home town with all his family here.

He added: "Obviously, having not had too many players involved over the last few years, it was great to have three at least involved. Although he never got on the pitch it's a huge step forward for him being involved.

"Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie got on the pitch for 90 minutes so they've bounced back into the building.

"Hopefully, we see that added confidence and feel-good factor, and that added motivation in their play to stay involved at national level."
