Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish believes whoever takes over as national team manager has big shoes to fill following Gordon Strachan.

Strachan left his position after Scotland failed to qualify for the World Cup, with the SFA approaching the IFA for permission to speak to Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill on Wednesday about becoming his replacement.

While unwilling to reveal his preferred candidate, Dalglish says Strachan has set the bar high for the next incumbent to the national hot-seat after twice going close to qualifying for major tournaments.

Dalglish, who's biopic Kenny premiered earlier this week, told STV's Scotland Tonight: "I wouldn't be too keen on throwing names forward but what I would say is that the person coming in next has a far more difficult job to follow but a better start than what Gordon Strachan had when he came in.

"I think Gordon moved it onwards and upwards. He came in at a poor time for Scottish football and improved it since then.

"He has set the bar high for the next guy coming in. If the next manager can move it forward, I think Gordon deserves a lot of credit for that."
