Celtic out of Champions League after 2-1 Bayern defeat
Celtic performed impressively but lost to Bayern Munich in Champions League Group B.
Javi Martinez's towering header proved the winner as Celtic lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich, ending the Hoops' chances of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.
French winger Kingsley Coman capitalised upon a defensive mix-up to score the German side's opener, rounding goalkeeper Craig Gordon to finish after Dedryck Boyata left a hopeful long ball.
Callum McGregor brought Celtic level with 15 minutes remaining, latching onto James Forrest's through ball and sliding it under Sven Ulreich.
But Spanish anchorman Martinez silenced a raucous Celtic Park, rising above Nir Bitton and powering a header into the corner that eventually proved the winner.
Brendan Rodgers made four changes from the side which lost 3-0 in Munich a fortnight ago and his side's performance was much improved as a result.
Celtic made a bright start and almost went in front when the lively Forrest found Scotland compatriot Stuart Armstrong with a floated cross, but the midfielder fluffed his lines from six yards out.
They were made to pay soon after when Coman pounced on slack defending from the home side, nipping in between Boyata and Gordon before rolling the ball into the bottom corner.
Celtic pressed for an equaliser in the second period and almost levelled when Armstrong drilled a low shot from the edge of the box, but Ulreich stretched to tip the goalbound effort around the post.
Columbian playmaker James Rodriguez went close to doubling Bayern's lead on 67 minutes, only to be denied by Gordon's outstretched leg.
Forrest, a constant threat to Bayern's back line on the evening, dribbled across the field before slipping through McGregor to convert.
Celtic looked set to cause an upset, but Martinez had other ideas and slammed a header into the far corner to restore Bayern's lead.
Rodgers' Hoops can no longer qualify for the knockout stages, due to an inferior head-to-head record against the group's two elite outfits.
They remain third in Group B however after Paris Saint-Germain thumped bottom-side Anderlecht 5-0 in the French capital.
